Full authenticity is thus conditioned by integrity and good self-esteem. For that reason alone, authenticity is worth striving for in all interpersonal relationships. If we think of self-esteem as the foundation of a building, integrity is a structure that rests on this foundation, just as the brick walls rest on the concrete foundation. Authenticity and credibility are like the building’s exterior walls and materials, which let us decode the building’s appearance, construction and function: ‘What you see, is what you get.’ Nevertheless, or perhaps precisely for that reason, buildings that are easily decoded can still be outstanding architecture, like Jørn Utzon’s Sydney Opera House.
