Der har v\u00e6ret publiceret mere end 2000 fagf\u00e6lle-bed\u00f8mte videnskabelige artikler om soja om \u00e5ret. Man skulle tro, at vi efterh\u00e5nden ville v\u00e6re n\u00e5et til en videnskabelig konsensus p\u00e5 omr\u00e5det. Det er desv\u00e6rre ikke tilf\u00e6ldet af flere grunde. For det f\u00f8rste er en stor del af forskningen udf\u00f8rt i laboratorier eller som dyrefors\u00f8g p\u00e5 mus og rotter. Det har ogs\u00e5 i denne sammenh\u00e6ng vist sig, at resultater fundet i laboratorier og p\u00e5 dyr ikke umiddelbart kan overf\u00f8res til mennesker. En stor del af forvirringen omkring soja skyldes, at sojab\u00f8nner indeholder plante\u00f8strogener \u2013 ogs\u00e5 kaldet phyto\u00f8strogener. I 2001 blev der offentliggjort resultater fra dyrefors\u00f8g, der viste, at plante\u00f8strogener i soja \u00f8gede v\u00e6ksten af brystkr\u00e6fttumorer p\u00e5 mus. Det skulle senere vise sig, at plante\u00f8strogenerne i soja oms\u00e6ttes helt anderledes i os mennesker, end de g\u00f8r i gnavere.
